Pets and mounts

A friend at your heel

13 monsters can be tamed, from the Ichorling to the Cerberus Pup, each with the one treat it can't resist. Feed your pet and it grows fond of you, and a fond pet lends you a bonus of its own. Hoplites and Aegis Guardians can ride a war horse besides.

Taming

The one treat it can't resist

Find the monster, wear it down, and offer it its lure. If it takes it, it's yours: it curls up into an egg, and hops out to follow you wherever you go.

The right lure

Each of these monsters has one treat it can't resist, and comes for nothing else. Orpheus, Charmer of Beasts, sells every lure in Ithaca, and every pet's food but the Owlet's Cheese Crumb: Maze Mice carry it, in The Labyrinth.

Close, and weak

Use the lure on the monster from within 5 blocks. The weaker it is, the likelier it comes: twice as likely as it nears death. Win or lose, the lure is spent.

Into an egg

If it comes, it curls up into an egg in your bag, so make room first. Another of its kind takes its place in time.

Let it out

Use the egg and your pet hops out and follows you about, one at a time. Call it back into its egg whenever you like.

A name of its own

A new pet answers to what it is, Ichorling or Cerberus Pup, until you give it a name of up to 16 characters. You can rename it once, and it keeps that name for good.

The egg keeps it

Drop the egg or trade it and the pet goes with it, name, fondness and all. No shop will buy one.

Every pet

13 monsters to tame

The easiest first. The first number is the chance with a monster at full health, the second with one all but beaten. Every lure is Orpheus's, in Ithaca, and so is every pet's food but the Owlet's Cheese Crumb: Maze Mice carry it, in The Labyrinth. A pet lends its bonus once it's Cordial.

Moods

How fond it is of you

A pet's fondness runs from 0 to 1,000, and its mood shows how it feels. A new one starts at 250, Neutral; from 750, Cordial, it lends you its bonus.

  1. Awkward

    0–99

    Barely puts up with you.

  2. Shy

    100–249

    Warming to you.

  3. Neutral

    250–749

    Getting along.

  4. Cordial

    750–909

    Fond of you.

    Lends its bonus

  5. Loyal

    910–1,000

Devoted, with a heart over its head now and then.

Feeding

The way to its heart

Fondness comes from meals. Feed your pet its own food when it's hungry, never when it's full, and it grows fonder by the meal.

Hunger

A new pet is full, at 100. Out of its egg, its hunger drops by 1 every minute; in its egg, it never gets hungry.

Its own food

Each pet eats one thing and nothing else. A meal fills 20 hunger: about 20 minutes out of its egg.

Fondness

A meal makes a starving pet (under 25) fonder by 20, a hungry one (under 75) by 10, a peckish one by 5. Fed at 90 or more, it cools by 50.

What a meal does

By how hungry it was. Hunger runs from 0 to 100, full.

The quickest road

Neutral to Cordial in 25 meals

Feed it each time it's starving again, for +20 a meal: from 250 to 750 takes 25 meals, and about 8 hours 20 minutes out of its egg. On to Loyal at 910: 33 meals, about 11 hours in all.

Running away

Don't let it starve

At hunger 0 a pet cools by 20 fondness every minute. If its fondness ever falls to nothing, it runs away for good, egg and all. Starving, a new pet is gone in 13 minutes, a Cordial one in 38 minutes. Feed it, or call it back into its egg, where it never gets hungry.

  • New pet: gone in 13m
  • Cordial: gone in 38m
  • Most fond: gone in 50m

Mounts

Fight from the saddle

As Ragnarok's Knights and Crusaders ride, Hoplites and Aegis Guardians can take a war horse from Bellerophon's stable in Corinth, for 2,500z, once.

125% speed

In the saddle you move at 125% of your walking speed.

1,000 more weight

The horse carries 1,000 more for you while you ride it.

Spears at 100%

From the saddle a spear strikes medium-sized monsters at 100%, where on foot it strikes them at 75%.

Up and down

Once it's yours, get up and down at will. Riding, you can't sit: get down first.

Who rides

Only Hoplites and Aegis Guardians fight from the saddle. Born again, a hero starts over as a High Novice, and the horse goes back to the stable: take one again as an Exalted Hoplite or an Exalted Aegis Guardian.

“Pegasus I tamed with a golden bridle. These horses only need a fair price and a rider who knows a spear.”
